BCSD's 15th Oconee Classic Returns Bigger, Louder, and Better Than Ever

There’s nothing quite like the sound of Braves Stadium on Oconee Classic day.
The music. The drums. The cheers from the stands. And, of course, some of the best high school marching bands in Georgia taking the field one after another. This year, Baldwin High School once again welcomed bands, families, and fans from across the state for the annual Oconee Classic Marching Band Competition, turning Braves Stadium into a full-day celebration of music, talent, and community.
Now in its 15th year, the Oconee Classic has grown into one of Baldwin High School’s signature fall traditions. Bands competed throughout the day in categories including Band, Color Guard, Drum Major, and Percussion, with performances evaluated in music performance, visual performance, and overall music and visual effect.
For BHS Band Director James McMillan and the many volunteers who make the competition possible each year, that continued growth is part of what makes the Oconee Classic so special. "This year was one of our largest shows with 18 bands in attendance and over 2000 student musicians performing," said McMillan. "Our goal every year is to provide a top notch marching competition in the state of Georgia. We want it to be a positive experience from the moment they arrive to the moment they go home."
And there was plenty happening beyond the field. Vendors, concessions, volunteers, families, and supporters filled Braves Stadium throughout the day, creating the kind of atmosphere that has helped make the Oconee Classic much more than a band competition. It has become a gathering place for people who love marching band and an opportunity for Baldwin County to welcome students and families from communities across Georgia.

As the host band, the Baldwin Band of the Braves traded competition for hospitality, helping welcome visiting programs before taking the field for an exhibition performance of their own. It was a chance for the hometown crowd to celebrate the students who represent Baldwin High School throughout marching season while also giving visiting bands the spotlight they had worked so hard to earn.
By the time the final notes sounded and the trophies were presented, another Oconee Classic was in the books. Congratulations to the Lowndes High Georgia Bridgemen on earning the title of Grand Champion, and to every student, director, volunteer, family member, and supporter who helped make the 2026 Oconee Classic another unforgettable day at Braves Stadium.
The Baldwin County Band of the Braves capped off the day-long competition with an exhibition performance preview for their upcoming challenges throughout October. "Now that we have done our hosting responsibilities our next plan is to go out and start competing ourselves," said McMillan, "Our three competitions we are attending this year are: October 3rd Sound of Silver in Blackshear, GA, October 17th Sound of the County in Hamilton, GG, and October 24th Heart of Georgia in Warner Robins, GA"
We can't wait to see the what stellar performances our band brings home next!
