BHS Girls & Boys Track Win Regional Championship


BHS Girls and Boys Track Team

The Baldwin High School Braves and Bravettes track and field teams are the 2017 GHSA 4A Region 3 champions. The Bravettes were lead by senior and Indiana University signee, Zykeria Williams. Zykeria is the individual region champ in the long jump, 200 meter dash, and 100 meter hurdles, she also is a member of the region 4 x 100 meter relay team. Zykeria was awarded the Girls High Point trophy for the region meet. The Braves made history by winning the first region track and field title in school history. The Braves were lead by junior Hezekiah Hartry who is the region champion in pole vault, he finished in second place in the 3200 meter run, and third in the 1600 meter run. Hezekiah won the Boys High Point trophy for the region meet.

Along with Williams and Hartry there are several region champions on both teams. Bravettes Freshman Mollie Speights is the region champion in the high jump, Sophomores Makayla Butts and Jakayla Hubert were crowned region champions in the 800 meter run(Butts) and 300 meter hurdles(Hubert). The Bravettes also are the region champions in the 4x100 meter relay. Members of the team are Zykeria Williams, Shakeria Collins, Jakayla Hubert, and Jasmine Chester. Junior JaTavious Harris is the 100 and 200 meter region champion, Senior LaKeith Redding won the region championship in the 110 meter hurdles. Sophomores Dacarious Jones and James Kilgore are region champs in the 300 meter hurdles(Jones) and the 1600 meter run(Kilgore). Freshman DaMarcus Reeves won the region championship in the 3200 meter run. The Braves also won the region championship in the 4 x 400 meter relay. Members of that team are JaTavious Harris, Evan Simmons, Dalvin Ruff, and Darius Ruff.

Both teams had several top four finishers at the region meet, they will move on to represent Baldwin High at the GHSA 4A State Sectional meet at Cross Creek High School Saturday April 29. Brittany Trawick finished second in the 100 meter dash and the long jump, Nysherria Braddy finished second in the 100 meter hurdles, Jakayla Hubert finished second in the 400 meter dash, Makayla Butts finished second in the 1600 meter run, MiKia Wynn finished fourth in the 3200 meter run. Makayla Ricks finished third in the high jump, Kennedy Morgan finished fourth in the triple jump, and Tremajae Neal finished third in the discus throw. The girls 4 x 400 meter relay team finished second(Williams, Hubert, Collins, and Lanika Ross).

The boys qualifiers are Devin Stephens second place in the 200 meter dash, Dalvin Ruff second place and Evan Simmons fourth place in the 400 meter dash, James Kilgore second place and Dexter Harden fourth place in the 800 meter run, and Dacarious Jones finished second in the 110 meter hurdles. In the field events Rodney Walker finished second and Tacorey Clayton finishes fourth in the high jump, Clayton also finished fourth in the triple jump, while Kendrick Bell finished third. Milton Adams finished fourth in the long jump, Willie Parks finished fourth in the discus throw and Willie Williams finished second in the shot put.

Both teams move on the the state sectional meet Saturday in Augusta.
