The Role of Deputy Superintendent

​The Deputy Superintendent of Baldwin County Schools plays a critical leadership role in supporting the daily operations of the District through management, supervision, and improvement of the school district. This role involves direct oversight of key departments, including: Athletics, Attendance, Discipline, Maintenance and FacilitiesSafety and SecuritySchool Nutrition, Social Workers, Technology, and Transportation (see links below) with a focus on ensuring alignment of day to day operations and initiatives directly supports student achievement and continuous school improvement. The role of Deputy Superintendent of Schools is currently held by Dr. Rodney Tyson, Sr. who has served since July 1st, 2025.

In Baldwin County, the Deputy Superintendent leads district wide instructional improvement efforts in collaboration with the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, ensuring the effective implementation of research based practices and the fidelity of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). The Deputy Superintendent supports school principals through ongoing coaching, professional development, and performance evaluations, while also coordinating leadership team meetings to foster collaboration and consistency across schools. Additionally, this role entails monitoring academic performance data, guiding the development and implementation of strategic initiatives, and ensuring compliance with state and federal educational requirements.

The Deputy Superintendent's duties include leading district accreditation, supporting the strategic plan's implementation, and serving as a liaison to internal and external stakeholders. Through developing robust systems, enhancing communication, and fostering a shared vision for excellence, the Deputy Superintendent helps ensure all students in Baldwin County Schools are ready to learn, grow, and achieve.

About Our Deputy Superintendent

Dr. Rodney Tyson serves as the Deputy Superintendent of Baldwin County Schools, bringing a unique blend of leadership experience from education, the military, and the private sector. With over two decades of service in education, Dr. Tyson has held roles as a high school principal, alternative school principal, and district administrator, providing him with deep insight into school operations, instructional leadership, and student centered improvement.

​

A retired military officer, Dr. Tyson is recognized for his disciplined and strategic approach to leadership, as well as his unwavering commitment to service. His background also includes years as a successful business owner, where he developed skills in team management, financial operations, and customer service, skills that translate seamlessly into leading large, complex school systems.

​

Dr. Tyson holds a doctorate in educational leadership and brings a results oriented focus to his work in Baldwin County. He is passionate about building strong systems that support principals, empower teachers, and drive student success. In his role as Deputy Superintendent, he works closely with district and school leaders to ensure every child in Baldwin County has access to a safe, supportive, and high quality learning experience.
