The Baldwin County Board of Education is preparing to vote on a proposed reduction to the school district’s millage rate at its public meeting on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 12:00 p.m.
If approved, the millage rate would decrease from 12.40 mills to 12.07 mills. That means Baldwin County property owners would see a lower school tax rate on their property tax bills this year.
So, what does that mean in plain terms?
The millage rate is the property tax rate set by the Board of Education each year. One mill equals $1 of tax for every $1,000 of a property’s assessed value.
In Baldwin County, about 41% of the school district’s budget comes from local property taxes, while another 56% comes from state funding.
By rolling back the millage rate, the district is giving tax relief to homeowners while still keeping our schools funded.
Of course, this decision comes with trade-offs. The reduced rate would mean about $237,808 less in revenue for the district, which equals about a 1.21% decrease in overall funding.
Neighboring counties currently set their school millage rates between 11.98 and 14.67 mills, so Baldwin remains competitive and fair in comparison.
The Board has chosen to take the full rollback this year, showing its commitment to balancing community needs and educational priorities.
The final decision will be made at the August 21 public meeting. We encourage all community members to attend and stay informed as Baldwin County Schools continues to invest in the success of our students.
