On Thursday, November 10th, the Baldwin County School District held its annual District Teacher of the Year Banquet at the Magnolia Ballroom at Georgia College, where it was announced that Oak Hill Middle School Science Teacher Susan Curtis is the 2023 BCSD Teacher of the Year. Congratulations to Susan Curtis and to all of the Teacher of the Year finalists: LaShonda Hurst (Lakeview Academy), Brittany Nichols (Lakeview Primary), Stephanie Coxwell (Midway Hills Academy), Shelia See (Midway Hills Primary), and Felexia Walker (Baldwin High School).
Georgia College President Cathy Cox, BCSD Board Chair John Jackson, and the Honorable Floyd Griffin were just a few of the special guests who spoke before the announcement of the 2023 District Teacher of the Year by the 2022 Teacher of the Year Seticia Smith.
Each school's Teacher of the Year was introduced by their principal, following a special dinner and video showcasing each of the teachers. Superintendent Dr. Noris Price said, "because of caring and dedicated teachers like the ones we are honoring here tonight, I was able to change my future and my family's future," in her speech at the event, "that's the impact that a teacher can have on a child. That's the power of education. It can be the tool we need to combat societal issues like poverty, unemployment, drug abuse, disease, and even hate."
A special thanks to Assistant Superintendent Sharon Hunt-Simmons and Superintendent Executive Assistant Gina Whitaker for planning and organizing this event as well as our Partners In Education and sponsors: Midsouth FCU, Exchange Bank, Baldwin Charter System Foundation for Excellence, Simply Southern Barn, The Briary Flower Shop, and Dr. Janet Harrison.
