Brooks' Brief for February

Special Blog Post by Superintendent Dr. Kristina Brooks
Special Blog Post by Superintendent Dr. Kristina Brooks

The early spring energy is evident in our hallways as we are fully into the second half of the school year. From athletics, arts, and academics, the hard work of our staff, and the growth of our students show that you are committed to making Baldwin County a premier place to learn, grow, and succeed.

We are currently mapping out the future of our district, and we want to make sure your voice is part of the foundation. Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts through our strategic planning survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BaldwinCoSchools

Redistricting Proposal

Following the recently held (Feb 17) town hall, we are moving forward with seeking input as we consider a plan to better serve our students and maximize our resources. A second town hall will be scheduled on March 2 at 5:30 pm and hosted in the Board of Education meeting room.

These townhalls are being held to discuss school configurations and zoning. We are excited to consider how a transition of the two Midway Hills schools into a K-5 model within the current Midway Hills Academy building could positively impact student achievement and family engagement. This proposal is considered for the Midway cluster as it allows the school to remain a true, vibrant community school.

Within this proposal, we are reimagining how the current MHP building can be the new home for the Baldwin Success Academy. This 6th–12th-grade magnet school will focus on radical support for students who need a different path. Through intentional mentorship and academic innovation, BSA would be created to help students turn untapped potential into future readiness, ensuring they graduate with the character and skills to thrive in the real world. As many are aware, we currently have some of our most vulnerable students being served remotely, and we want every child to benefit from the structure and expectations that come with regular school attendance in a supportive, disciplined environment.

To ensure we are using our state allotments effectively and placing every educator where their unique talents can shine, please note that all certified contracts have been sent out for those being asked to return to the district. For those certified teachers moving to a new building next year to better align with our district goals and individual skill sets, HR will be in touch by the end of this week, sharing those details with you. We are committed to making these transitions as smooth and supportive as possible. Information for classified staff is expected to be shared no later than early March.

i-Ready Data Shows Jump in Grade-Level Reading

Join me in congratulating our K-5 teachers! Our mid-year i-Ready data shows a strong jump in the number of students approaching grade-level reading. Your daily dedication is turning our students into independent readers.
