Prom season is here, and the Baldwin County School District is making sure every student has the chance to shine. The district’s beloved initiative—Say Yes to the Prom Dress or Tux—is still going strong, with the Prom Closet open through April 20 for students at Baldwin High School and across the district.
What Is "Say Yes to the Prom Dress or Tux"?
Launched three years ago, this program helps students who may not be able to afford prom attire. Thanks to generous community donations, students can visit the BCSD Prom Closet and choose a formal outfit at absolutely no cost.
“We don’t want anyone to feel left out,” says Shonya Mapp, BCSD Family Engagement Coordinator. “This program ensures every student feels like they belong at prom.”
Community-Powered and Confidential

The Prom Closet is stocked with brand-new dresses and tuxedos, many donated by local bridal shops and community members. Appointments are private and respectful—students shop just like they would in a boutique, leaving with their outfit discreetly bagged and ready for the big night.
“All fittings are confidential,” says Mapp. “No one has to know where the dress or tux came from.”
Open Through April 20
While the big kickoff event was held on March 22, the Prom Closet remains open by appointment through Prom on April 20. Families are encouraged to reach out and schedule a visit.
This program, originally championed by Dr. Noris Price, has not only become a staple in Baldwin County, but it’s inspiring other school districts to follow suit.
“We’ve had interest from all over,” Mapp says. “But we’re focused on taking care of our own students first.”
As Baldwin High School gets ready for prom night, the Baldwin County School District is proud to keep doors—and closets—open for all.
