From Baldwin County School District to the NFL
The Baldwin County School District has produced many remarkable graduates, but few have left a legacy as enduring as Earnest Byner, Baldwin High School Class of 1980. A standout athlete who found his passion on the football field, Byner’s journey from Baldwin High to the NFL is a testament to discipline, perseverance, and excellence in education.
Byner’s success began at Baldwin High, where he played quarterback and running back. He credits his coaches and teachers for instilling a strong work ethic that shaped his future.

“Baldwin High School was more than just where I played football—it was where I learned discipline, accountability, and how to push myself beyond my limits,” he reflected.
The Path to Professional Football
After graduating, Byner attended East Carolina University, where he quickly made a name for himself on the field. His dedication paid off when he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 10th round of the 1984 NFL Draft. Over a 14-year career, he played for the Browns, Washington Redskins (now Commanders), and Baltimore Ravens, winning Super Bowl XXVI with Washington.
His impact on the game went beyond stats—Byner was known for his leadership, resilience, and ability to mentor younger players.

Life After the NFL: Coaching and Community Service
Byner transitioned from playing to coaching and motivational speaking, serving as an assistant coach for Washington and Baltimore before founding The Healing Dawgs, a nonprofit that supports veterans, at-risk youth, and the homeless. “Every experience—whether success or failure—is a lesson,” he shared. “Learn from it, grow from it, and pass that knowledge on to someone else.”
His commitment to excellence in education and mentorship continues to impact communities nationwide.
Advice for Future Baldwin Graduates

Byner’s advice for students dreaming of an NFL career—or any ambitious goal—is simple: “Find something you love, and give it your absolute best every day. Success isn’t just about talent—it’s about discipline, learning from failure, and always pushing forward.”
His journey from Baldwin High to the NFL and beyond is a shining example of how the Baldwin County School District prepares students for greatness, both on and off the field.
