A Big Win Off the Field

Baldwin County School District is celebrating a major victory this season, not just in the end zone, but across every court, field, and track. That's because in 2025, Baldwin High School has officially been recognized as a Safe Sports School by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, making it the 21st school in Georgia to receive the designation. The award honors schools that go above and beyond in student-athlete safety, emergency readiness, and wellness education.

And behind this game-changing honor?

One very dedicated trainer.

Meet Shawn Andrew Shivers: The Man Behind the Tape

When Shawn Andrew Shivers joined Baldwin County School District Athletics in July of 2024, he stepped into a brand-new role as the district’s first full-time athletic trainer.

“I take care of all athletes on campus, no matter what sport,” Shivers explained. “It’s not just about wrapping ankles. It’s about education. It’s about care.”

On any given day, Drew may treat 15 to 30 student-athletes from cross country runners and football linemen to wrestlers, softball players, and track stars. His reach spans across fall, winter, and spring sports, helping students stay on the field and in the game.

A District Committed to Wellness and Readiness

What sets Baldwin apart? According to Principal Markeeta Clayton, it’s not just about what happens during practice, it’s about what happens between the action.

“Drew has not only elevated the quality of care for our student-athletes,” Clayton said. “He’s changed the culture. Our students feel seen, supported, and prepared every time they step onto the field, court, or track.”

That culture of care is why Baldwin High School now meets every requirement of a Georgia Safe Sports School, including:

  • Full-time access to a certified athletic trainer

  • Comprehensive injury prevention and concussion protocols

  • Emergency action planning and response

  • Heat illness and environmental monitoring

  • Wellness education for students, coaches, and staff

Turning Storage into Strength: ESPLOST in Action

Thanks to ESPLOST funding, Shivers didn’t just bring new energy he brought new equipment and new training spaces.

Unused rooms across campus have been converted into modern athletic training centers, complete with recovery tools, weights, and rehabilitation stations. Students now have access to care that rivals many college programs without ever leaving campus.

BEFORE AFTER

A Safe Sports School Equals a Stronger Community

Behind every touchdown and every buzzer-beater is a team working quietly to keep students safe and strong. “Drew’s presence has brought peace of mind to parents, students, and coaches alike,” said Athletic Director Coach Dexter Ricks. “We know our athletes are getting the same level of care they’d receive at the college level. That makes all the difference.”

And for Superintendent Dr. Kristina Brooks, this award affirms what Baldwin has always believed: success starts with support. “Being named a Safe Sports School validates the intentional steps we’re taking to protect and empower our students,” Dr. Brooks said. “Drew Shivers represents the best of who we are — and where we’re going.”
