On Thursday, September 5th, the Baldwin County School District participated in its annual Local School Governance Team training. This training fulfilled one of the requirements of the Baldwin County School District Charter System agreement with the Georgia Department of Education.
The Baldwin County School District became a Charter System in 2016. At that time, the state required school districts to choose one of the following governance models: Charter System, Strategic Waiver System, or Status Quo. After researching the governance options, the Baldwin County School District chose to become a Charter System.
What is a Charter System? There are 48 school districts in Georgia that are “Charter Systems.” This means that the local board of education and the state board of education have signed an agreement (referred to as a “charter” contract). Georgia’s Charter Systems seek flexibility under state mandates and in turn commit to meeting higher performance goals. Charter Systems use this flexibility to implement innovative or unique programs, in order to provide educational options to parents and students.
Baldwin County School District Governance Team members participate in annual training to maintain the highest possible standards for students while operating within the Charter System. Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s school principal for more information about joining the Local School Governance Team, an essential component of the Charter System for all schools.
