On Saturday morning, October 29th, family, friends, colleagues, and students gathered at the intersection of State Route 49 and Blandy Road in memory of Lakeview Primary music teacher Kathryn Lynn Poff. Miss Poff was born March 16, 1989, in Roanoke, Virginia to Kent Poff and Karen Alderman Poff. She passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2016, in Milledgeville from injuries sustained in an automobile accident at the intersection that was dedicated in her honor on Saturday. For the past six years members of the Baldwin County Board of Education, State Representative Rick Williams, family members, and community leaders have worked with the Georgia Department of Transportation to install a traffic light and to have the intersection named in honor of Miss Poff.
"I only knew her for two years," said Superintendent Noris Price at the unveiling of the street sign, "but in those two short years, she made an incredible impact on me and everyone else whose lives she touched. Along with Dr. Price, Representative Williams, District Board Chair John Jackson, and Lakeview Primary Principal Tracy Clark also spoke on Poff's professional and personal legacy with the District.
"Ms. Poff always found something special in every single student," Clark said. "There were a lot of students that became interested in drama and chorus just because of the way she taught. It didn't matter if they weren't musically inclined - she found a way to make sure they were part of it."
There were also tender memories expressed by Poff's mother as well as one of her former students before the sign's official unveiling and ribbon cutting.
