Baldwin Bravettes Create Custom Posters for 'Read to Lead' and Read to Classrooms Across the District

In the wake of the Baldwin Bravettes' recent State Championship victory, Baldwin High School's Media Specialist, Pamela Longino, orchestrated a transformative initiative that saw the Bravettes themselves reading to students and delivering homemade posters promoting literacy empowerment.

Drawing inspiration from the American Library Association's iconic 'read posters,' featuring celebrities advocating for literacy, Longino sought to spotlight local heroes: the Bravettes of Baldwin High. The initiative began modestly, capturing the boys' basketball team's triumph in 2019. Athletes, photographed with their favorite books, became champions of reading, their images adorning posters distributed across elementary schools, igniting inspiration in younger minds.

Expanding the program's scope to encompass the entire championship-winning team, Longino recognized the potential of every player to inspire. Beyond the courts, these athletes became ambassadors of literacy, visiting elementary schools and Georgia College Early College, sharing tales of perseverance, signing autographs and offering words of inspiration and encouragement.

The Lead to Read initiative dovetails seamlessly with Baldwin County's broader Literacy Initiative, championed by educators like Dr. Price.

In the eyes of Longino, the importance of local heroes in shaping students' aspirations cannot be overstated. Proximity breeds relatability, and the Bravettes' triumph serves as a beacon of possibility, inspiring generations to pursue excellence both in academics and athletics. Through Lead to Read, the power of literacy becomes a transformative force, igniting dreams and shaping futures in the heart of Georgia's Baldwin County.
